Shreyas Nakate

Shreyas Nakate (connect on LinkedIn) is a field biologist and biodiversity specialist with expertise in wildlife behaviour, monitoring of elusive species, and technology-driven conservation approaches, including drone-based wildlife monitoring. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Zoology and a Master’s degree in Biodiversity from Maharashtra Education Society’s Garware College of Science, Pune, affiliated with Savitribai Phule Pune University, India.
He has been associated with projects under The Habitats Trust (THT) in collaboration with researchers from the Max Planck Institute and Spain, contributing to wildlife research and conservation initiatives across India. He also worked with The Grasslands Trust (TGT), where he contributed to projects focused on assessing wolf ecology and herbivore populations using drone and AI-integrated monitoring approaches in collaboration with The Habitats Trust.
His interests and expertise focus on tracking and monitoring elusive species using cutting-edge technologies and developing monitoring protocols for species inhabiting the arid and open landscapes of the Indian subcontinent. He has conducted multiple workshops for the Maharashtra Forest Department, training field staff and officials in drone operations, camera trapping techniques, and scientific sampling methods for wildlife monitoring.
Shreyas was appointed as a Conservation Biologist and Consultant by the Global Tiger Forum (GTF) in support with Madhya Pradesh Forest Department and the Astral Foundation for the monitoring and habitat assessment of the Asiatic caracal in Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary. His responsibilities included conducting habitat assessment surveys and collecting ecological data through camera trap-based monitoring methods.
Over the years, he has also contributed to wildlife research projects and conservation films, with a strong focus on Indian grey wolves and the preservation of India’s open natural ecosystems.
United by a shared vision, Shreyas Nakate co-founded CCARP, bringing together scientific rigor and ground-level experience to uncover what has long remained unknown. Shreyas currently serves as the Co-Founder and Director of the Caracal Conservation & Research Project (CCARP), where he continues to lead and support research, monitoring, and conservation initiatives focused on caracals and India’s open natural ecosystems.
